Mary Jane Berkowitz died on March 11, 2007 of complications following surgery. She was 73.

Known to many as Mimi, Ms. Berkowitz was born on June 19, 1933 in Ridgewood, New York to Edward K. and Jane P. Drier. She graduated from Ridgewood High School and Connecticut College in New London. Her parents and grandparents spent many years on Shelter Island.

She married Harry W. Berkowitz in 1956. The couple lived in the southeast before settling in Norwalk, Connecticut. Mimi was an active member of the Norwalk community, serving as a director of a local historical society and volunteering in the schools. Mimi returned to Shelter Island every summer to rent a house.

Among her many interests, she enjoyed gardening, needlepoint and knitting and was an avid bridge player. Her greatest delight was spending time with her husband, children and her granddaughter, Hayley, on Shelter Island.

Mimi is survived by Harry, her husband of 51 years, and by her children, Edward F. Berkowitz of Bristol, Connecticut; Peter S. Berkowitz and his wife Debra of Trumbull, Connecticut; Ann D. Berkowitz of Alexandria, Virginia; and David Young of Brentwood, Tennessee. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Bill Dailey, and her three granddaughters.

A memorial service was held yesterday, March 21, in Norwalk. Mimi was interred next to her parents in the Island's Emily French Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mimi's memory to the Norwalk Community Health Center (121 Water Street, Norwalk, Connecticut 06854), Connecticut College (270 Mohegan Avenue, New London, Connecticut 06320) or the Darien Historical Society (Old King's Highway North, Darien Connecticut 06820).
