Earned Naval Aviator wings after 1922 graduation from U. S. Naval Academy. Served in Fighting One(VF-1) "Top Hats" operating from USS Saratoga (CV-3). Made first Saratoga arrested landing after she was commissioned. Subsequently commanded Fighting Two (VF2) "Flying Chiefs" operating from USS Lexington (CV-2). Commanded USS Midway (CVB-41) from 12 Jan, 1946 to 18 Jul, 1946. Retired as a Vice Admiral.
