Cornelius Roosevelt DUFFIE II
Birth: 6 AUG 1821 in Waterbury, Conn
Death: 8 JUL 1900 in Litchfield, Conn

Married: Sarah Brush CLARK b: 20 OCT 1833 in Danbury, Conn
Married: 23 JUN 1863

Note:
From "The Duffie Family of Edinburgh and New York" by Patricia Ellerton Duffie published 1983 - p128 - Cornelius Roosevelt Duffie II was inspired to spend long years in theological studies by his relatives' comments that he should become as good a man as his father. In 1845 he became a deacon, In 1849 he was ordained a priest and in 1865 he earned a Doctor of Divinity degree from Columbia College. While he was recovering from an illness that affected his voice, he was a curate at Trinity Church in New York and organized a new parish on the outskirts of the city. When his voice improved, he became the first rector of the small congregation meeting in a temporary chapel. In the spring of 1852 Margaret Duffie gave her nephew a trip to Europe at her expense. CRD II visited clergymen and toured the great cathedrals of Rome, Paris and London. In London's Paddington Railway Station he saw Queen Victoria and her family returning from Windsor Castle. He wrote of his disappointment in their somber, drab appearance. His letters from Europe are the only remaining expression of his life away from church duties. A description of CRD II in his fifties is found in Patten's "Clergy of New York and Brooklyn" (1874). He was of medium height with slightly graying brown hair, well proportioned though portly, energetic, active, and a hard worker. Patten noted that CRD II was quiet, serious, reflective, reserved, absorbed in his own thoughts, deeply conscientious, and a calm, sincere preacher. An 1878 newspaper article comments on his vigor, good health, pleasing smile and youthful appearance.
