Walter "Wally" served as a Captain, 459th Fighter Squadron, 80th Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in St. Mary's County, Maryland prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on May 20, 1942. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Actor and also as Single, with dependents.

"Wally" was declared "Missing In Action" over Meiktila, Burma during the war and later was confirmed as being "Killed In Action". At the time of his death he was the ranking Ace of the 459th Fighter Squadron with a total of 13 air victories and eight victories on the ground.

He was awarded the "Silver Star", "Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters", Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

Because Walter F. Duke had volunteered and served with the Royal Canadian Air Force prior to U.S. involvement in WWII he also received the Burma Star, a British medal awarded to individuals serving in British or Commonwealth units.
