U.S. Congressman. He was one of the earliest ironmasters, moved to Greenville County, South Carolina, in 1787, where he prospected and negotiated the iron in the region. He was a member of South Carolina House of Representatives, (1794-97), a member of the South Carolina State Senate in 1800 and elected as a Republican to the Ninth Congress, serving (1805-07). He was again elected to the Twelfth and Thirteenth Congresses, serving (1811-15), then again elected to the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Congress, serving (1817-21).
