Warren Easton was state superintendent of education from 1884 to 1888, when he became superintendent for the New Orleans public school system, a position he maintained until his death in 1910. He established the State Normal School in Natchitoches, now known as Northwestern State University. He started the Louisiana Teachers Association, now called the Louisiana Association of Educators. Warren Easton High School, the first public high school in Louisiana, is named in his honor. The school opened three years after Mr. Easton's death and became a charter school in 2006.
