Donald E. Edwards, 89, of Springfield passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at Memorial Medical Center. He was born November 11, 1927, to Clarence and Myrtle (Connelly) Edwards. He married Peggy Powell March 4, 1951, at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Don was a 1945 graduate of Virden High School and US Army veteran serving in the Korean War earning two bronze stars and Korean Service Medal. He was thrilled to be a participant in a 2014 Honor Flight. He was the former owner of Colonial Vending Company and Deer Park Campground. He retired from Lawson Products in 1990. In his younger years, he was an avid bowler and golfer and had a life-long love of fishing. He loved to garden, both vegetable and flowers, and had 10 green thumbs. He was a great cook and loved to fix food for family and friends. He scheduled his activities around when NASCAR races were televised and loved to watch old western TV shows and movies. He was a life member of VFW and DAV and former member of the Shriners, Masons and Elks.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy; sons, Gerald Thomas and Donald Mark (Marcia) Edwards; daughters, Stephanie Sue (Gary) Hirsch and Lisa Gene (Terry) Reazer; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Dean, Darryl (Nancy) and Russell (Carol) Edwards; and many nieces and nephews. Don will be dearly missed by all his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Douglas; and brothers, Robert and John Edwards.

Memorial Gathering and Service: 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home, Springfield, IL, with Chaplain Jim Hibbett officiating. Inurnment will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
