Araminta Matilda Eken, age 91, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, in her home surrounded by her family.

She was born in Baltimore on July 19, 1919, to Harry and Mary Elizabeth Allen. She was one of 10 children.

Tillie graduated from The Institute of Notre Dame High School in Baltimore in 1937. She then received her nursing certifications from St. Agnes Hospital. During World War II she received a degree in engineering graphics from John Hopkins. While working at Glenn L. Martin in Baltimore she met a young engineer, Joseph S. Eken, who was the love of her life. They were married on Aug. 2, 1947. They transferred to White Sands, N.M., and lived there several years. They knew they had found paradise when they crossed Destin Bridge while visiting friends in the area. They moved to Fort Walton Beach, Fla., in 1950 and started their family. In 1958 they built their home on Paradise Point in Shalimar, Fla. Tillie volunteered as a school nurse while her daughter and son were young. She worked as a drafting supervisor at Vitro on Eglin Air Force Base for 20 years.

Tillie and Joe traveled extensively meeting and making friends all over the world. They belonged to the Eglin Yacht Club and spent countless weekends on the boat. After retirement they sold the boat, purchased a motor home and traveled around the U.S. and Mexico. Their home was known for their 5 o'clock happy hours! Family and friends enjoyed many memorable times during these very happy, "happy hours." They loved sunsets on their porch. Tillie was a very sweet, loving wife, mother and friend.

Tillie was proceeded in death by three sisters, Cecillia, Virginia and Jean; also three brothers, Harry, Joe and Jimmy. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Joseph S. Eken; daughter, Elizabeth Owens, her husband Robert and children Chad Evans, his wife Lisa, and James Marsh; son, Alan Eken, his wife Marilyn and children Leslie Hylton, her husband Marlon, Emily Garcia, her husband Mike, and Brian Yates, his wife Shannon; brothers, Gus Allen, his wife Fran, Mickey Allen, his wife Lil, and Eddie Allen; special niece and caregiver, Genny Peters; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at McLaughlin Funeral Home, 17 Chestnut Ave., Fort Walton Beach, on Saturday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. Following the service, the family will receive friends at 5 Paradise Point, Shalimar.
