SUMMERVILLE - Susanne Ellett Berkaw, 91, died Sunday morning, May 17, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital, Charleston. She was born April 2, 1918 in Blacksburg, VA and was the daughter of the late Robert Thaddeus and Maude Henderson Ellett. Mrs. Berkaw was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Class of 1938 obtaining a Bachelor's of Science degree. She was the wife of Bergen (Berk) F. Berkaw. They met while studying at VPI and married September 6, 1941. She had two brothers, the late Robert Thaddeus Ellett, Jr. and James Henderson Ellett. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, a son, Bergen Frederic and his wife, Mary Groseclose Berkaw, Jr., and a daughter Mary Neale Berkaw. A son, Robert Ellett Berkaw preceded Mrs. Berkaw in death. Mrs. Berkaw was an active Christian and a member of several Episcopal churches in the Charleston area, Church of the Holy Communion, Holy Trinity, and St. Paul's Summerville. She was a member of the Altar Guild, The Episcopal Church Women, serving as Diocesan Historian and a board member of Canterbury House. Mrs. Berkaw was a founding member of The Shepherd Center in Charleston, a board member of Hospice of Charleston, and with her husband hosted over 100 Elder Hostels at Camp St. Christopher. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dorchester Habitat for Humanity, St. Paul's Church, 316 W Carolina Ave., Summerville, 29483, or Church of the Holy Communion, 218 Ashley Ave., Charleston, 29403. Family and friends may call at the St. Paul's Church Building on Wednesday evening May 20, 2009, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at Saint Paul's Church, 316 W.
