The Lord called home an angel home! Evelyn Lee Elliott was born April 29, 1932, in Excelsior Springs, Missouri to Beatrice Hunter and Edward Elliott. She moved to San Diego, California at 12 years of age. She attended area schools and graduated from San Diego High School in 1949. On July 22, 1956, Evelyn united in marriage with Cecil Hayes Steppe at Bethel Baptist Church, their home church. This union raised five children.
In 1974, Evelyn graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor's Degree and a California Teaching Credential. Her love of children led her to work as a preschool teacher which she enjoyed immensely. When her youngest daughter was accepted to Stanford University, Evelyn secured a higher paying position as a clerk with San Diego Unified School District.
Possessing a beautiful voice, Evelyn had a long and illustrious singing career, dating back to early childhood in Missouri. She was a soloist for the San Diego High School Choir, under the direction of Mr. Maxwell. After graduation, she continued singing annually with the High School Alumni Choir. While not widely known, Evelyn performed as a jazz singer with the Walter Fuller Quartet, appearing in various venues in downtown San Diego. She also sang with the San Diego Master Chorale and was most recently a member of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir. She performed with the Choir when they toured Europe including a presentation at the Vatican. Evelyn was also a member of the Chollas View United Methodist Church choir where she was a devoted member for over 40 years. Chollas View is currently under the leadership of Pastor Patricia McRae.
In addition to her work as a member of the Chollas View Women's Group, Evelyn was a member of various community boards. She was a long time member of the California Ballet Board, The National Council of Negro Women, associated with the San Diego Natural History Museum "Covey" and was a strong worker and supporter of San Diego Junior Theatre. She involved her children in a variety of Junior Theatre experiences from performing to lighting and sound to stage management. She was also a proud member of San Diego Police Department's Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol (RSVP) for several years.
Evelyn always put her heart and soul into any activity or group in which she participated. She was often described as a loving, wonderful and caring person by many in the community. Her commitments were rewarded with recognition as "A Woman of Distinction" and as "Grandparent of the Year," along with her husband, Cecil.
At approximately Noon on August 11, 2015, God, our Father, needed a wonderful soloist to join the Celestial Choir He was conducting. He reached down to Evelyn, whom He had kept in His sights for 83 years and brought her home to serve with the saints.
Left to celebrate a life so graciously and lovingly lived is her husband of 59 years, Cecil, 5 adult children, 10 adult grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, sisters: Kimberly Lowe from Hawaii and Karen Mendez of Silver Springs, Maryland; and a host of other family members and loving friends.
