Bertha was born in Flora, Illinois. Very likely at her mother's parents' home. She was named for her father's oldest sister, who also carried the name of her father's sister, Sister Mary Bertha Bowlds of the Sisters of Loretto.
She grew up in Wayne County around Fairfield, where she married Joe Ellison on 20 Jun 1906. The marriage record say his parents were William and Sarah (Sutton) Ellison. Census records indicate he was born in Canada, his parents were Irish, and he arrived in the USA in 1880. They moved to Chicago and had one son born in 1909 and died in 1910.
When her mother died in 1907 she took on the role of mother to her six year old brother Walter. Walter stayed with them for about 10 years then joined his father in southern Missouri.
They lived in South Dakota in 1920 with her brothers Leslie and Walter who married sisters there. Both would later live with them in Illinois at different times, as well as the widow and son of her brother Clarence when they lived in Algonquin in 1930.
She became the anchor for her brothers following the death of their father in 1924.
