Commercial artist Dade Ellison, 75, who worked on a number of well-known accounts as a free-lancer and while employed by ad agencies, died at Evanston Hospital on Wednesday.

From 1973 to 1982, he held the title of executive art director while free-lancing with William A. Robinson Marketing Services Agency in Chicago. He was responsible for the graphic direction of such accounts as Wild Turkey, Philip Morris, John Deere, International Harvester, and Gordon's gin, among others.

Before that, the Wilmette resident had been vice president and associate creative director at the Kenyon and Eckhardt ad agency since 1960. Among the manufacturers he served there were RCA Victor, Brunswick, Norge, Lincoln Mercury, and Pabst Blue Ribbon and Blatz beers.

As a free-lancer, he worked for Orange Crush, the American Cancer Society, and Bell and Howell.

Mr. Ellison was born on the South Side. He attended the American Academy of Art and Northwestern University. His career began with the Henri, Hurst and MacDonald agency. As executive art director, he was involved in ads for Kroehler, Jockey underwear, and Mercury Records.

Serving in the Army in World War II, Mr. Ellison did art work and public relations stateside. He also wrote and produced a syndicated military cartoon, "Detail for Today," that ran in more than 300 newspapers.

In his community, he was well-known for doing artwork, including logos, for a number of municipal departments. He also served on the advisory board of Mundelein College and was past president of the St. Francis School Board.

Surviving are his wife, "Pug"; three daughters, Bonnie Carpenter, Sue, and Holly; a son, Scott; a sister, Jayne Berland; and six grandchildren.

Mass will be said at 10:00 a.m. today in St. Frances Xavier Catholic Church, 524 9th Street, Wilmette.
