KINGSPORT - Curtis Ely was born on March 5, 1916 in the Poor Valley section of Dryden, Va. He passed away on Friday (Dec. 3, 2004) at Holston Valley Medical Center after several years of declining health.
He was one of 10 children born to Charlie and Donna Tritt Ely, all of whom had preceded him in death.
Curtis had worked hard all of his life, in logging and later in coal and road construction. On May 10, 1967, he married Geraldine Galloway and they had made their home in Kingsport for the past 37 years.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Ely; three children, Anna Ruth Shuler of Dryden, Va., Joyce Hawthorne and husband James of Grand Prairie, Texas, and one son, Lawrence Edward Ely and wife Jane of Noblesville, Ind.; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren; a stepson, Teddy Galloway and wife Flo of Big Stone Gap, Va.; a stepdaughter, Loretta Ward and husband Joe of Kingsport; five stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
His presence and smile will be missed by us all.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Oak Hill Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Duke Barker officiating.
Entombment services will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The staff of Oak Hill Funeral Home is serving the Ely family.
