Reverend Bobby H. Ely, age 84, of Sevierville, passed away peacefully at LeConte Medical Center on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 following a lengthy battle with cancers. His wife was by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Barbara Smallman Ely. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rose Minton Ely, Robert (Bob) and Arta Edgar Ely, and sister, Peggy Ann Aaron.
Bobby graduated Carson Newman College with a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degree along with teaching certification. He received his Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University Divinity School in 1962. Reverend Ely served churches in Madison, Tennessee, and throughout East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. He retired from pastoral ministry after serving First United Methodist Church, Sevierville for over 17 years in 1994. Bobby loved his community and served as a leader. One example, upon retirement, he immediately established the first Chaplaincy Program at Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center in 1994, and continued this ministry through the transition to the LeConte Medical Center totaling 21 years. Due to his illness, he retired from this ministry in August of 2015. Patients, staff, physicians and volunteers were all blessed by his love and compassion for all he met. His quick wit and dry sense of humor made him a joy to be around. His hobbies included: time spent in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, gardening and tending to his flowers such as his Dr. Robert F Thomas Iris, Lucinda Ogle, Rose of Sharon among others. Bobby's beautiful flowers graced the Sanctuary many times of First United Methodist Church of Sevierville for over 39 years. Bobby's compassion for people in the community and serving their needs, led him to gain support for establishing the Sevier County Food Ministry in the Dr. Broady Building next to the parsonage, which now serves thousands.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Sunday, October 11, 2015 at 3 PM at First United Methodist Church, 214 Cedar Street, Sevierville. Following the worship celebration, everyone is invited to the Great Hall for a sharing of stories of your memories with Bobby and how he touched your life.
