EUGENE REYNDERS EMERSON

Funeral services for Eugene Reynders Emerson were conducted Tuesday, May 5, 1992 at the Union Congregational Church, Green River. The Rev. David Wade of the First Congregational Church officiated. Graveside funeral services and interment were conducted Wednesday in the Gov. Frank Collins Emerson Family Lot in the Lakeview Cemetery in Cheyenne.

Pallbearers in Green River were Ryan Emerson Boettcher, Alton Hermansen, Norman Stark, James E. Sullivan, Rudolph Swierczek and Charles Yates. Pallbearers in Cheyenne were Bill Smith, Ron Olson, Bill Mill, James Medina, Ben Whitefild and Rex Mauch.

Emerson, 74, of 160 Apache Drive, Green River, died shortly after being admitted to the Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County at 10:32 a.m. Friday, May 1, 1992. A longtime resident of Green River, Emerson died of a sudden illness.

He was born on Sept. 16, 1917 in Basin, the son of the late Frank Collins and Zenia Jean Reynders Emerson. He attended schools in Cheyenne, Wyoming and was a graduate of the Laramie High School. While in high school Emerson played football, basketball and was active in swimming. He attended the University of Wyoming and was on the swim team and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. His college education was interrupted by World War II. Emerson was a captain and a company commander when he served in the 3rd Army under General George Patton. He served in the United States Army from Aug. 1, 1940 to Feb. 24, 1945 where he received a medical discharge after being wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He received two Bronze Stars and various other medals.

Emerson married the former Mildred Bohmont in Macon, Ga., on March 16, 1941. The Emersons moved to Southern California in 1945 where Emerson graduated from the University of Southern California with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. Following graduation he worked for the Brazilian Aeronautics College in Brazil for three years. The Emersons returned to Green River in 1954 where Emerson operated a hardware and sporting goods store in Green River. Emerson went to work for the State Farm Insurance Company where he worked for 27 ½ years until his retirement Nov. 1, 1988.

Emerson was a president of the Sweetwater County Underwriters Association two times and he held every office in this organization. As a State Farm agent, Emerson qualified for the Legion of Honor and the Millionaire Club, both nine times.

He served for three years as chairman of the open day care center in Rock Springs beginning in 1969. He served as fund drive chairman for the Girl Scouts of America and fund drive chairman for the Green River Wolves Swim Team. Emerson was a charter member of the Green River Rotary Club and served on the Board of directors for nine years. He served as chairman of the Congregational Episcopal Church Building Fund in Green River in 1972. He served in every office of the Congregational Church from moderator to Chairman of Church’s Inc. Board of Directors.

Emerson was a descendant of two people who signed the Mayflower Compact and came over on the Mayflower,. He was the son of the former Wyoming Governor, Frank Collins Emerson. He was a member of the Union Congregational Church, the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Elks.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Emerson of Green River; two daughters, Mrs. Richard A. (Lachelle) Boettcher of Rock Springs, and Caron Demars of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, David Emerson of Sun City, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Ryan, Scott and Lindsey Boettcher, all of Rock Springs and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Emerson was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Collins Emerson II.
