Mr. Ensworth became so inspired by the treatment he received from Dr. Heddens that upon Mr. Ensworth's passing he left his estate to promote health care in the city of St. Joseph. This resulted in the Ensworth Hospital Medical College into which the College of Physicians and Surgeons was merged in 1888. This school was located at 7th and Jules St. in St. Joseph and it became the first to graduate a women physician in Missouri - when it graduated three of them 1891.
In 1924 Ensworth Medical College was absorbed by the Methodist Episcopal Church which turned Ensworth into the
Missouri Methodist Hospital. Eventually through other merges and transactions it finally emerged in 1972 as the Methodist Medical Center.
