Louise Erwin Burke is the daughter of George Frank Erwin and Lilly Bell Warner Erwin. She was the wife of Charles Wood Burke, Sr.

Louise Erwin Burke and her husband, Charles Wood Burke, Sr. were two of the most well known and highly respected citizens of Attalla, Etowah county, Alabama.

Charles Wood Burke, Sr. was our Mayor of the City of Attalla for 28 years, and Louise Erwin Burke was a teacher in the Attalla, Etowah County, Alabama and many of we War Boom Babies, who grew up in Attalla, Alabama had the privilege of having Mrs. Louise Erwin Burke as our teacher.

After World War II ended, the large military base (which housed thousands of soldiers) known as "Camp Sibert" was closed. In "1948", the "Camp Sibert" Officers Club was turned into the junior high school for Attalla, Etowah County, Alabama and it was named Officer's Club Junior High School. Mrs. Alma Anderson Hinson was the principal. In about "1952", Mrs. Louise Erwin Burke began teaching at Officer's Club Junior High School. She taught Science.

She was still teaching at Officer's Club Junior High School when the new Junior High School was being built on the location of the Officer's Club Junior High School during "1960-1961". She was then a teacher at the New school, Alma Hinson Junior High School, named after Mrs. Alma Anderson Hinson. This new school was completed by the fall school year of "1961"

Louise Erwin Burke was born in West Point, Troup County, Georgia and she was a graduate and received her AB degree from the University of Georgia.

Louise Erwin Burke and her husband, Charles Wood Burke, Sr. were both members of the First Methodist Church of Attalla, (also known as First United Methodist Church of Attalla).

Services for Louise Erwin Burke, 93, Kilgore, Texas, will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with the Revs. Robert Besser and Ralph Rudy officiating. Arrangements are under the directions of Rader Funeral Home, Kilgore. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Attalla, with the Rev. Gary D. Heathcock officiating. Burial Arrangements are under the direction of Morgan Funeral Chapel.
Mrs. Burke died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, in a Longview, Texas, hospital. She was born Nov. 20, 1908, in West Point, Ga., the daughter of the late George Frank and Lilly Bell Erwin. She graduated from the University of Georgia and was a retired public school teacher. She was lifelong Methodist and attended First Methodist Church of Attalla until moving to Kilgore in 1989 where she joined St. Luke's United Methodist. Her faithful service to the church included serving as a communion steward, life membership on the administrative board, the Wesleyan Guild, the United Methodist Church Women and the Susanna Wesley Sunday School Class.
Her husband, Mayor Charles Wood Burke, Sr., preceded her in death in 1974. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Burke and Don Adams, Kilgore; son and daughter-in-law, Charles W. Jr. and Sarah Burke, Woodbridge, Va.; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Rader Funeral Home.
The family request memorials be made to the St. Luke's United Methodist Church General Scholarship Fund and the Building Fund for the First Methodist Church in Attalla.
