2023 UPDATE: Research in France found that Mary Ann/Marianne was born March 2, 1826, daughter of Francois Xavier Faber (a teacher and son of Francois Xavier and Rosine (Ramme) Faber) and Catherine Jung (daughter of Joseph and Catherine (Matz) Jung). She had at least eight siblings, including a set of twins. Her sister Marguerite came with her to the United States on the Belmont in 1850. They both gave their occupation as "farmer."

Debt of Gratitude is owed M. Francois David of the Bretagne Genealogy and History Center in Rennes whose knowledge of web resources, French, English and Latin unlocked Marianne's birth record as well as seven generations of her maternal family.

In the 1920 Census, Mary Ann's son John reported that his mother was born in Alsace Lorraine and that her native language was French.

She married first John Baptist Ansel. (Also found as Jean Baptiste Ancel. He was born in Lorraine, France ca. 1820 and died in Batavia on May 4, 1867.) They lived in the Town of Alexander, Genesee County at least until June 1860 and then bought land in the Town of Batavia on Creek Road near the railroad. In all, they owned 28 acres.

In addition to the sons listed below, they had a daughter:
~Mary (Born ca. 1855; Married Emanuel Smith ca. 1888-1892; Resided Comstock, Nebraska; Died and buried 1921, Colorado Springs. He came from England ca. 1870-1878.)

Mary Ann married second John DeVelle (or Devella). They signed a pre-nuptial agreement in December 1867 regarding land mortgaged by her first husband.

A will from 1898 shows that she had two sisters in France:
~Marguerite Faber, widow of Joseph Houtman, living in Lorquin with her niece, Mary Decot wife of Nicholas Louis; and
~Catherine Faber, widow of DeCot.

Her record of death filed in the Town of Newstead, NY only states that her father was "Christiane" and that her mother was "born in the US"--though neither of these statements appear to be true. Family and St. Joseph records indicate that she is buried at St. Joseph's.

Her exact age was not known at her death as she claimed not to know it but was estimated to be 75 by her son, Joseph.
