Elizabeth Birkeland
Elizabeth Birkeland, 98, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the hospital in Fort Benton.
Eastern Star funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Fort Benton. Burial will be in the family plot in the Riverside Cemetery.
Elizabeth was born Oct. 21, 1896 in Great Falls, the first of six children born to Mary Ellen Palmeter Flager and Denis Flager, all of whom preceded her in death.
When she was three weeks old she was taken to the Homer and Flager sheep ranch which was located at Winchell Springs. The ranch also served as a stage stop and post office, which was named Steele. After the coming of the railroad, the town of Geraldine was established at this spot. Family friend, Fannie Wilson, always insisted that Beth was the first baby to live at Geraldine.
Beth lived the greater part of her life in Chouteau county. At the turn of the century the family lived for a few years in North Carolina, but returned to Chouteau county in 1907 and homesteaded on the Nine Mile Bench north of Highwood. Beth attended schools in North Carolina, Nine Mile, Fort Benton and Wesleyan in Helena.
Jan. 31, 1917 she married Francis Robinson. They made a homestead at Valentine, in Fergus county, and then returned to his home in Dayton, Wash., where he died Jan. 31, 1920.
Mar. 7, 1922, she and Ingolf Birkeland were married and together they established Birkeland and Son, Inc., a wheat growing operation still being operated by their son and grandsons.
Elizabeth joined the Fort Benton Methodist Church in 1911 and at the time of her death had held membership in that church longer than any other person. She was an active member of her community and church; teaching Sunday School, active in Ladies Aid, Fort Benton Women's Club, member of the Board of Directors of the Fort Benton Community Association when it was first organized, a 65-year member of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1936, Daughters of the Nile, Flower Growers Club, Home Demonstration Club, Kensington Sewing Club and Cub Scout Den Mother.
Beth was a warm, caring and generous person who always had time to play with her grandchildren or to feed an indigent who appeared at her kitchen door. An avid gardener, she planted and maintained large vegetable and flower gardens, sharing them with family and friends. In later years when she and Ingolf spent winter months in Arizona, she turned out prodigious amounts of knitting and needlepoint for her large family.
She is survived by four daughters, Margaret Ritter of Fort Benton, Helen Bergh and Beverly Carlson of Polson, and Barbara Hulbert of LaConnor, Wash.; a son, Tom Birkeland of Fort Benton; 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ingolf, in 1974; a daughter, Phyllis Birkeland in 1950; and a son, Francis Robinson in 1992.
