Johnnie Mae Allen, 89, of Bryan, passed away on January 8, 2017, just weeks before her 90th birthday. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 9 p.m., Friday, January 13, 2017, at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 14, 2017, at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Bryan. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Johnnie Mae was born in Burleson County, Texas, to the late Sam and Mamie (Dorsey) Ford. Her father was a farmer, while her mother managed the family home and their children. Her parents were blessed with a large family which included nine children.

As a girl, Johnnie Mae was happiest when singing praises to God with her family, both at home and in the church as part of the Canaan Community in Bryan. She attended Fairview High School, where she was "Dribble Master" of halfcourt basketball. One day, while James Arthur Allen, Sr. was visiting the Ford Family Home, he met and became mesmerized with Johnnie Mae. They later married on May 9, 1944. Just like her mother, Johnnie Mae managed the family home, then eventually served in hospitals around town.

A brilliant conversationalist, Johnnie Mae could make anyone feel comfortable and calm in her presence as if they had been lifelong friends. Her family members cherished her love, warmth, and wit, along with her keen fashion sense—she always looked her best and shaped her Christian character to reflect her inner light.

During her 61 year membership at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, Johnnie Mae participated in the choir there, strengthening the faith of all who heard her beautiful, God-given voice as she sang and served her brothers and sisters in Christ. Additionally, Johnnie Mae lived Christ’s commandment ("I was a stranger, and ye took me in"), which explains why she was a mother and grandmother to all who she encountered. She also regularly held prayer meetings in her home and even decorated Bibles in her spare time, along with beautifying the rest of her home for each holiday. When she went to visit her sisters in Denver or Chicago, Johnnie Mae carried her faith and sunny disposition along with her.

Johnnie Mae loved to wear bright floral prints which reflected her optimistic faith in the future, and likewise, she loved tending her garden just as she had her children, with great care, investing herself in what it would become. Even as the mother of a large family, Johnnie Mae knew that "You can do anything as long as you have the time and are not disturbed." So she repurposed furniture, made jewelry boxes, and painted cabinets, stopping now and then to share a favorite dish or dessert with family and friends: enchiladas, chicken strips, pink peanut patties, a delicious chocolate cake from Sam’s Club and, of course, Blue Bell Ice Cream (either Butter Pecan or Cookies and Cream). Her light, love, and laughter were divine gifts to her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James; sons, Robert Lane Allen and Harvey Leon Allen; daughter, Jacqueline Patrice Allen; and siblings, Vivian, Sam Jr., Georgia, Robert Charles "Good", Jessie Ray, Esterlene and Huelett.

Survivors include her daughters, Mamie Auston, of Bryan, Beverly Scott and husband, Robert, of Bryan, Deborah Green and husband, Larry, of Mansfield, and Narla Shae Lockett and husband, Robert, of Bryan; sons: James Allen, Jr. and wife, Joyce, of Bryan, Reverend Donald Allen, Sr. and wife, Margaret, of Dallas, Frederick Allen, Sr. and wife, Linda, of Bryan, and Michael Allen, of Bryan; granddaughter, Yolanda Allen, of Bryan; 21 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren; sister, Lillian "Lump" Weaver; and godchildren, Wayne Steen and Kelvin Hunter.
