Born in Lombard, Illinois, in 1925, Gloria graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, earning her bachelor's in sociology in 1946 and subsequently a Ph.D. in child development from Harvard University in 1953. During the early part of her 40-year career, she taught at the Harvard School of Education and was a researcher in math education and learning at Stanford University. Ultimately, she devoted her career to clinical services and advocacy for children with mental health needs. She served as associate, then executive director of Peninsula Children's Center (now "Achieve Kids") from 1970 until her retirement in 1990. She also served on California State and Santa Clara County Commissions on mental health and was honored statewide for her work. She was honored with the Lifetime of Achievement Award bestowed by Avenidas and Palo Alto in 2004. At the same time, the roles of mother and wife were central to her life. She was an avid world traveler, mentor to many and a self-taught gourmet cook.
She is survived by her husband, Professor Herbert Leiderman of Stanford, California; her daughter, Dr. Deborah Leiderman (husband Dr. Virgil Frizzell) of McLean, Virginia; her son, Dr. Joshua Leiderman (partner, Dr. Angela Jo) Albuquerque, New Mexico; granddaughters, Sarah and Abby Frizzell; and son-in-law, Hayes Alexander. Her daughter, Andrea Leiderman, predeceased her in 2005.
