Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Lovella Lydia Peterson, passed away Monday, April 23, 2012, to join her eternal companion, James Albert Peterson, who predeceased her in 2009 after 66 years of marriage.
Lovella was born Jan. 6, 1924, in Escondido, Calif., to Milton John Freeman and Lydia Stewart Adams. She was the second daughter and sixth child of eight.
At the age of 3, Lovella moved with her family to Idaho, where she grew up as a hard working farm girl in the beautiful, rolling foothills and farmlands of Ririe and Osgood, Idaho. At the age of 8, she was baptized as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by her brother Milton in the "side hill ditch" that ran through their farm in Ririe.
In the summer of 1941, before her senior year of high school, Lovella met and fell in love with the tall, dark and handsome love of her life, "Jimmy" Peterson, during a trip to Los Angeles. After she graduated from high school, James and Lovella were married for time and all eternity Aug. 28, 1942, in the Salt Lake City Temple.
Shortly after their marriage, James enlisted in the Army Air Corps, and Lovella sent her new companion off to military training and eventual service overseas in Europe for the next three years. After the war, and after a short stop in Salt Lake City while James obtained a degree in education from the University of Utah, Lovella and James settled in the Idaho Falls area, where they lived for over 30 years, eventually moving to Boise upon retirement.
Other than her role as a loving mother and devoted wife, Lovella's most enjoyable job was with the Idaho Falls School Lunch Program, where she worked for almost 20 years.
Lovella and James loved family history research and enjoyed many trips in search of genealogical information. Lovella's legacy is summarized in one word, "selflessness." As a loving mother and grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, she exhibited absolute selfless love and devotion to her family.
Lovella was preceded in death by her loving husband; parents; her brothers, Milton and Calvin; and her sisters, Lola and Verla.
She is survived by her six children, Patricia (Bryce) Stapley, Ronald Peterson, Douglas (Karen) Peterson, Bradford Peterson, Rebecca Guillemette and Mark (Terri) Peterson; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. In addition, she leaves behind her younger sister, Mrs. Nada Meikle.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the Hickories Ward LDS Chapel, 6032 N. Five Mile Road in Boise, with Bishop Buckley conducting. A viewing will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Morris Hill Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Relyea Funeral Chapel.
