Our mom, Marlene Cox, left our world on Friday, November 9, 2007, to join her husband Norman and her Lord, Jesus Christ. She died peacefully of natural causes at her home in Grangeville. She was born April 16, 1937, in Ferdinand, Idaho, and was the eldest of five children of Lawrence and Hilda (Seubert) Frei. She attended school in Ferdinand and graduated with her small, but very close class in 1955. Upon graduation, she went to work at John Hoene Implement, where she worked many happy and fun-filled years as a parts manager and bookkeeper. She kept immaculate records and knew almost every single part for any piece of farm equipment. She was well known for being able to rattle off a parts number at any given moment. While working at John Hoene Implement, she met and fell in love with the love of her life and our father, Norman Cox. They were married May 27, 1961, in Ferdinand. They settled in a small ranch home just outside of Grangeville, farming, gardening, raising children and enjoying life to its fullest. After Dad's death in 1977, we all moved to Grangeville and Mom continued to raise us on her own, working several jobs to make ends meet. Mom lived in Grangeville all of her remaining years and enjoyed her life on the Camas Prairie. While enjoying her retirement years, her greatest pleasure was assisting the elderly with their care so that they could remain in their own homes as long as possible. Her love of cooking and her sharp wit, combined with her loving and caring personality, made her the perfect caretaker.

You were never caught bored with Marlene around. She had a witty sense of humor and could tell a good joke in the presence of anyone. Her laugh was contagious and she kept everyone in stitches. She enjoyed canning, freezing, crocheting, knitting, embroidery and going to yard sales. She also loved her family dearly.

In her younger years, she was an avid fly fisherman and enjoyed camping, fishing and going to the cabin with her family. As a young woman, she always enjoyed a cold beer and good company. In the summertime you would always see Mom and Aunt Merna (Heath) snippin' beans and sipping beer and preparing food to be canned for the winter months ahead. She loved the harvest months when Dad worked the fields and she could show her love of cooking by helping prepare the meals for the harvest crews. Mom had little sayings she was known for, such as "dinner will be ready here in a minute" (and it always was!) and "you just hide and watch." We will all miss our mom, sister, grandma and friend.

Mom was preceded in death by our dad, Norman, and her father and mother, Lawrence and Hilda Frei. She is survived by her four children, Bonnie Rae Potts and her husband, Doug, of Riverside, California; Bryan Lee Cox and his wife, Holly, of Grangeville; Shelly Marie Frei and her husband, Paul, of Lewiston; and Steven Edward Cox and his wife, Laura, also of Lewiston. She has six grandchildren, Lindsey, Sean, Molly, Melody, Jolene and Spencer, who loved her beyond measure. Her sisters, Lorraine (Harry) Knigge of Nampa, and Betty (Neil) Arnzen of Nezperce, along with two brothers, Roger (Bobbie Sue) Frei, and Tom (Terri) Frei, both of Boise, also survive her. She has numerous nieces and nephews as well.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 14, at Sts. Peter and Paul, and the funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Grangeville. Burial will follow at the Denver Cemetery. A dinner will follow the burial at Sts. Peter and Paul School gym.

Memorial donations can be sent to Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, the American Heart Association or the Monastery of St. Gertrude's in Cottonwood, Idaho.

Funeral arrangements are under Uhlorn Funeral Home.
