Mae Moss Richardson Baldwin French
1875 ~ 1947
Mae Moss Richardson Baldwin French will be inurned at the Boise Pioneer Cemetery on Monday, May 19, 2014 at 11:00, 67 years after her death on May 17, 1947.
Richard Demarest, Dean of St. Michael's Cathedral, will officiate at the service, to be attended by members of the GFWC Boise Columbian Club, as well as family and friends. Family members will include two of her grandchildren, Carole Baldwin Hesse and Rodney Baldwin; two of her great grandchildren, Edward Totten and Kim Coe; and her great great granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Totten.
Mae's body was taken by train to Salt Lake City, where she was cremated. Through miscommunication, other family deaths, and divorce, the cremains languished for years in a box in the basement of a Boise funeral home.
Mae was born January 28, 1875, daughter of Idaho pioneer Alonzo L. Richardson and Caroline Smith Yarrington Richardson. She attended finishing school in the east and then was in the first graduating class of St. Margaret's Academy, precursor of Boise Junior College/Boise State.
She married civil engineer Leighton I. Baldwin on June 14, 1906 at St. Michael's. Their only child, Leighton L. Baldwin, was born December 28, 1910. Mr. L. I. Baldwin died suddenly in 1925. Mae later married a childhood beau, Joe French, who died soon after.
Mae was tall for her era, slim, intelligent, and had an imperious manner. An accomplished candy maker, she operated Bluebird Confectionery for a few years, and for years entered prize-winning recipes at the State fair. Her favorite song was "Where or When."
