In Dorset VT on August 5, 1804 Lucy married John, son of John and Tamsen (Mead) Austin. John, too, was a farmer.
A year following the marriage of John and Lucy, they loaded their belongings into a wagon pulled by a team of oxen and headed to Western NY state. They built a cabin in West Hamburg, 12 miles south of Buffalo. The first year they didn't even have a door on their cabin and just hung a blanket to keep out the wind.
One winter day John had to go to Buffalo and left Lucy in bed with their six month old daughter, Eliza. He left his rifle near the head of the bed. While he was gone she heard a noise at the door and saw movement of the blanket. She raised the rifle and fired. John returned just before dark and saw a big black bear lying in the doorway. He called to Lucy and she answered that she was all right. He rolled the bear out of the doorway and went inside. Later he dressed the bear and they had meat and a robe.
They had nine children - Elizabeth "Eliza" born 1807, Maria born 1808, Calista born 1809 Harmon Deloss born 1811, James born 1818, Ira born 1819, Phidelia "Della" born 1821, Harriet born 1825, and Sophia born 1828.
Lucy passed away at age 64 leaving John a widower for another 15 years. Lucy and John were my third great grandparents.
