New Mexico Fullerton's Rangers

John Ferguson Fullerton was born May 9, 1856 in Lawerence, Pennsylvania to James Sharp Fullerton and Amanda J. Ferguson. He was the first Captain of the New Mexico Ranger Force. He was sworn into the Rangers on April 1, 1905 in Santa Fe and reported for duty in Socorro on April 15. He had picked Socorro as the base of operations. John's first wife was Susan Baker, of New Mexico. She was the love of his life. They had three boys, two of which died as infants. Their son, John Elmer, grew to manhood and married. Susan died December 29, 1893. John later married Katharine Sleight in 1903. That marriage ended in divorce. John was a top lawman in the territory. The Rangers were permanently disbanned in 1921 and were replaced by the New Mexico State Police. They started 106 years ago in Socorro, New Mexico with a Captain, Lieutenant,Sergeant and eight Privates. John F. Fullerton died in 1928 at the age of 72 years. He had gone to California to visit, when he caught a bad chest cold which devloped into pneumonia and he died January 26, 1928. He was buried in the Elks Rest section of the Greenwood Memorial Park Cemetery in San Diego, California. His beloved first wife Susan, and baby Raymond were exhumed and shipped to California where they are sleeping beside him.
