Mary A. Carpenter, 88, of Carlsbad, passed away Dec. 15, 2012 at Carlsbad Medical Center.

Mary A. Carpenter was born in Gary, Indiana, on March 3, 1924, to Emery and Anna Gabor. She lived in Indiana until 1972. Mary attended Lew Wallace High School in Gary. During World War II, she worked in the steel mills in Gary. After the war ended, Mary worked in various grocery and retail stores in northwestern Indiana. She owned and operated Thayer Cash Store in Thayer, Indiana, for several years in the 1960s.
Mary was a devoted mother, always involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed fishing, walking, cooking and gardening. She and her family moved to Carlsbad in 1972. After the death of husband, Leonard Carpenter, Mary worked in Carlsbad for McCullum Beauty Supply, then Trisha's Fashions, until she retired.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Raines, Sr.; husband, Leonard H. Carpenter; parents, Emery and Anna Gabor; five brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include two sons: Robert W. Raines and wife, Rebecca of Carlsbad and David P. Raines and wife, Carolyn of Eunice, NM; one daughter, Patricia R. Bryan and husband, Richard of Bixby, OK; four grandsons: David L. Raines of Carlsbad, Daniel S. Raines of Ft. Worth, Texas, Ricky Raines of Cisco, Texas and Joshua Bryan of Tulsa, OK; 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
