Death's Doings - Walter B. Garner. West Virginia Argus. Kingwood, WV. Thur., May 9, 1907.
Excerpt -- The many friends and relatives of Walter B. Garner were shocked this week to hear of his death, which occurred at Goodwin's Ferry, Giles County, Va., where he had been working for the past two years for J. C. Zobrist & Co., railroad contractors. The deceased was a blacksmith and had been with this company for several years.A telegram was received Sunday conveying the notice of his death Saturday night about 9 o'clock. The remains reached here Tuesday morning, accompanied by the widow and two children, and James Pack, an employee of the company, who was sent to bring the body home and pay all expenses, showing that Mr. Garner stood well with his employers.
The funeral party was taken at once to the residence of John H. Garner, where services were held at 2 o'clock that afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. H. Hess, pastor of the M. E. Church here. Quite a crowd attended the funeral and the remains were followed to the Kingwood Cemetery by a long line of carriages. A short service was held at the grave and he was laid to rest till the judgement day. The deceased was born near Kingwood, April 29, 1866, and was the son of William M. Garner, of Pleasant Dale. He was married March 18, 1888, to Elizabeth E. Shay, and is survived by her and two children, a boy and a girl, they have one child that is dead. The deceased was a strong and hearty man and worked at his business until Friday evening when he was taken ill with gallstone colic and suffered severely until death relieved him the next evening.
