Susan was the daughter of George and Clarinda Gifford. She was born in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

Susan seems to have had an interesting life.

She was first married to Samuel (or Leonard) Hicks on 4 February 1851 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts. The marriage intention was filed on 24 November 1850. Samuel was a mariner. They had two children: Martha and Susan Idora. By the time Susan Idora was born, Samuel was in the house of corrections.

No divorce or death records have been found thus far for Samuel.

Susan married a second time in 1856 to another mariner from South America named Manuel Toucher. They were married on 14 October 1856.

By 1860, Susan was living with Thomas Reed in Randolph. They had one daughter, Phebe, at that time. They were not married until 1865. Another son Thomas was born in 1863. Thomas died in 1867.

In 1870, Susan married Hiram Beal (apparently for the first time!) on August 9th in Canton. They are together on the 1880 census.

Another marriage is recorded in 1893 for Susan and Hiram, on September 22nd in Brockton.

On the 1900 census, Susan and Hiram are recorded as being married 30 years. Susan is the mother of 4 children, all living.
