COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Francis B. Gilbert, 87, of 20 Pioneer St., passed away on Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at Bassett Hospital.
He was born in Oneonta on Nov. 24, 1912, the son of Fred and Florence (Baldwin) Gilbert.
He graduated from Oneonta High School, then from Boston University.
He was married to Florence Menard on Oct. 24, 1952.
He taught social studies for many years at the Indian River Central School.
After he and his wife retired, they moved to Cooperstown.
Mr. Gilbert took an interest in reading, gardening and nature.
He was predeceased by his wife in 1996.
Mr. Gilbert is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, John L. Gilbert and Maxine Gilbert of Clayville; one sister-in-law, Salina Grennan of Port Orange, Fla.; a special niece, Mellony Light of Clayville; a special nephew, Jack Gilbert of Clayville; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
At Mr. Gilbert's request, his body will be given to medical science. There will be a memorial service at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Bassett at 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.
Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
