DOG ARISTOCRAT STRAYS FROM HOME
PAYS UNINVITED VISIT TO HOME OF ONTARIO WOMAN
ONTARIO - June 21 - She entertained royalty unawares. When a stray dog dragging a broken piece of chain came to her house, on Archibald avenue in the Cucamonga district several days ago, Mrs. Clifford Beekman befriended the animal and fed it.
It required so much feed, in fact, already having a dog of her own, she decided that unless the owner quickly came to claim the new arrival she would be in a class with Old Mother Hubbard, and therefore inserted a found ad in the paper.
It was not until A. A. Conti, Ninth street and Vineyard avenue, came to claim the canine that Mrs. Beekman learned that ‘Jack’ is a police dog with a pedigree dating back to Revolutionary times; that he is insured for $10,000, and that his mother is a ‘movie star’ drawing down a salary of $600 a week.
Mr. Conti explained that he had been entrusted with the care of the dog while the owner , whose name was not learned, was in New York on a business trip, and that Jack had broken his chain and strayed away.

In the 1930 U.S. census, 32 yr. old Lucille Beekman, b. in CA., was living in Cucamonga, San Bernardino, CA. with her

Families who settled the western Inland Empire before 1930 gather at Rancho Cucamonga High for the annual Roots Reunion
RANCH CUCAMONGA - Negotiating the hustle and bustle of West End freeways makes it difficult to imagine a gentler landscape.
But 98-year-old Lucille Beekman, who lives in Ontario, remembers a different Ranch Cucamonga when her family moved to the area in 1908.
“It was like the Garden of Eden compared to what it is today,” said Beekman, whose family operated a grocery store on Archibald Avenue at the time.
“We’ve lost all the orchards, the vineyards and the beautiful roads with eucalyptus trees bordering them,” she said.
Beekman was among the more than 100 people Saturday at Rancho Cucamonga High School for the second annual Roots Reunion - a gathering of families who settled the western Inland Empire before 1930.
