Eugene Collins Giles

Eugene Collins Giles, 90, of Austin, Texas, died October 17, 2001, at Seton Northwest Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born September 4, 1911, to Eva Mae Collins and Dr. Grant Giles, M.D., in Stiles, Iowa. He married Florence Edna Augspurger on September 6, 1931, in Bloomfield. They had just recently celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary. He graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1928 and went to college at University of Iowa where he received his degree in pharmacy. He then returned to Bloomfield and opened the Giles Rexall Drug Store, which he ran as the town's pharmacist until 1951. He then joined Merck, Sharp, and Dohme as a pharmaceutical sales representative in Texas. He retired after 25 years of service and remained in San Antonio, Texas, for most of his retirement. Mr. and Mrs. Giles moved to Austin, Texas, in December 1999, to be closer to their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Eugene was a member of the Scottish Rite bodies and the Alzafar Shrine Temple in San Antonio. He attained the rank of Master Mason in Bloomfield, Iowa, was a charter member of Charles W. Anderson Lodge 1413 in San Antonio, and received his 50 Year Service Award in 1986. Eugene enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and was one of the last great storytellers. His stories about his youth and our family will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his wife, Florence; son, Dr. Grant Eugene Giles, D.D.S.; daughter, Judith Ann Giles Henges and son-in-law, Dr. David Faulkner Henges, M.D.; his grandchildren, Leslie Ann Henges Dolliver, Grant Eugene Giles II, Karen Elizabeth Henges, and Cynthia Jeanine Henges; and greatgrandchildren, Anna Katherine Dolliver, Logan Grant Giles, and Martha Collins Dolliver. Pallbearers will include Dr. Grant Eugene Giles, D.D.S., Dr. David Faulkner Henges, M.D., Grant Eugene Giles, II, John Russell Dolliver, Chris Cameron, and Dan Russell. He was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in San Antonio, Texas, where services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2001. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the family present. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the St. Andrews United Methodist Church.
