Michael Gilmore, 98, Dies ----- Fought Indians and Spoke Sioux
MILES CITY, MT. Sept. 30 ----- Michael Gilmore, Scout, who carried the mail for the government from Walla Walla to Fort Benton in the late 50's and early 60's fought Indians and spoke three Sioux langue's, died on his ranch south of here yesterday, his 98th birthday.
He was a government scout in 1877 during the flight of the Nez Perce Indians.
He took an active part in the Big Hole Battle and was wounded in the left ear by an arrow.
Gilmor came to Miles City 56 years ago and continued as scout and interpreter for the government for the government.
He later prospected in the Black Hills and subsequently joined General Bradley's expedition to Fort Laramie.
