After graduating from St. John's Academy, he farmed with his father on the family farm near Jamestown. For several years he farmed during the summer, and during the winter, he drove a truck in California, Missouri and many other states. On 3 December 1941, he married Orla Ringuette, also from Jamestown.

Bernard and Orla had a 1200-acre farm near Edgeley, LaMoure, ND where they grew grain and cattle until they retired. They were members of the Roman Catholic Church.

They had 4 children including twins, David Bernard and Rosemary, Gordon "Skip" and Patricia.
1. Gordon Lyter b 20 Dec 1942 in Los Angeles, graduated from Jamestown High School in 1961 where he was active in football, track and wrestling. He lived with his parents near Edgeley.
2. Patricia Elizabeth Glaspell born 20 December 1942 in Los Angeles.
3. David Bernard born 26 June 1947 in Jamestown. Twin to Rosemary.
4. Rosemary born 26 June 1947 in Jamestown. Received her elementary education in a one-room country school near Edgeley. After graduation from Edgeley High School, she worked for Bell Telephone as an operator. She was a corporate staff member, working on the FASC computer project in Omaha, NE. She served as a local officer of the Communications Workers of America Union and was a member of the Amnesty International Human Rights organization.
On 15 Feb 1980 in Jamestown, she married Earl DeGroot. They were divorced 7 Sept 1980. No children.
