For several years he farmed during the summer, and during the winter, he drove a truck in California, Missouri and many other states. On 3 December 1941, he married Orla Ringuette, also from Jamestown.
Bernard and Orla had a 1200-acre farm near Edgeley, LaMoure, ND where they grew grain and cattle until they retired. They were members of the Roman Catholic Church.
They had 4 children including twins, David Bernard and Rosemary, Gordon "Skip" and Patricia.
