Clifton Ray Goodwin, Colonel (Retired) US Army, 87, died peacefully Wednesday, June 14, in New Bern, NC.
He leaves his wife of 60 years, Allison (Nicolson) Goodwin; his son David (Joanne Richards) Goodwin; three daughters, Carolyn (Jim) Andrukonis, Andrea (Bill) Wheatley, Kathryn (Chris) Tone and 14 grandchildren. Colonel Goodwin was predeceased by his mother and father, Don and Eula Goodwin, and his brothers Carl, Walter, and Harold Goodwin, all from Maine.
Colonel Goodwin was born in Anson, Maine on October 31, 1929. After graduating from the University of Maine with a degree in Civil Engineering, he joined the Army, beginning a 30-year military career. While serving in Germany, he met the love of his life, Allison Nicolson of Santa Barbara, California, who was teaching in Germany for the Department of Defense. They married May 26, 1957 in Mannheim, Germany and started their life together travelling throughout Europe.
Colonel Goodwin, a career Army officer in the Air Defense Corps, served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, commanded a Nike Hercules Missile Battalion, and was advisor to the South Korean Missile Brigade Army Staff in Research, Development, Test and Evaluation. After moving 22 times in 11 years Clif and Allison bought a home in Annandale, Virginia where they lived for 20 years. His final Army assignments included Commander of Army's Harry Diamond Laboratories, where he was pivotal in the development of night vision technology and missile guidance systems and Deputy Commander of the Electronics and Research Development Command. He retired from the Army in 1983 and worked for a private company for 10 years. Finally fully retiring to a home they built in Kitty Hawk, NC, Colonel and Mrs. Goodwin enjoyed 15 wonderful years with treasured friends, family, and lots of crabs!
From Kitty Hawk, the couple moved to McCarthy Court Independent Living in New Bern, NC where they spent much of their time watching their grandkids play sports. In all the many places he lived, Colonel Goodwin was involved in a variety of community and church activities. His deep love of faith, family and country were evident to all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on July 15th at 1PM at Garber United Methodist Church in New Bern, NC. Burial will be at Arlington Cemetery at a later date. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at McCarthy Court and Home Place.
