Mr. Goodwin, who sometimes wrote under the pseudonym John Blaine, worked at various times for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Known to his friends as Hal Goodwin, Goodwin wrote popular science books, mostly about space exploration, as Harold L. Goodwin, "Hal Goodwin" and "Harold Leland Goodwin". He also wrote children's books as Blake Savage and John Blaine. His largest work was the ''Rick Brant Science-Adventure Series,'' a 24-volume series for children. The first book, ''The Rocket's Shadow'' was published in 1947 and the most recent, ''The Magic Talisman'' was published in 1990.
He was survived by his wife, Elizabeth; three sons, and three grandchildren.
