Rebecca was one of twelve known children of James Gordon and Agnes Glenn. In 1866 her mother and father and eleven of their children emigrated to Queensland, Australia from County Antrim in Northern Ireland on the "Maryborough". After disembarking in Brisbane, they went north to settle in the Bowen District on a property they called "Gordon Glen".

The eldest of Margaret's brothers, George Greer Gordon, had emigrated to the United States in about 1856 and eventually settled in Fairgrove, Tuscola County, Michigan. All of Margaret's other known siblings settled in Australia.

Rebecca was buried with her parents and her younger sister Mary (Gordon) McDonald in Bowen Cemetery on November 19, 1939.

Note: James Gordon's 1890 death certificate provides the given names and ages of ten of his living children. There is also a note to the effect that he also was the father of two deceased males and three deceased females. Their names are not given.

Obituary:

BOWEN. November 21.
Yesterday Bowen lost one of its very oldest and most respected citizens, Mrs. Rebecca Baker of Leichhardt Street. The late Mrs. Baker, who was 91 years of age, was one of the grand old type of settlers of whom Queensland should be very proud. She came to Bowen from a small town South of Belfast in 1866 with her parents, a younger sister (now Mrs. McDonald) and two brothers, Jim, two years older than herself, and a younger brother John, both of whom have always been very committed. One of Mr. Jim Gordon's sons, Ted, was probably one of the best riders over a high jump that our ring has seen; they also bred many good jumpers, including several record breaking horses and ponies.

Obituary:

Bowen lost one of its very oldest residents on Saturday last, when Rebecca Baker, of Leichhardt Street passed away. The late Mrs. Baker was 91 years of age and was one of the grand old type of settlers of whom Queensland should be very proud. She came to Bowen from a small town south of Belfast with her parents and other members of the Gordon family in 1866. A sister, Mrs. McDonald, and two brothers, Jim, two years older than the late Mrs. Baker, and a younger brother, John, who reside in Bowen are left to mourn their loss. Members of the Gordon family were well known in Proserpine some years ago. Tim Gordon was a frequent visitor to Proserpine in his younger days and often acted as the ring judge at the local Shows. His son George has officiated in that capacity for the past two years. Johnnie Gordon at one time was cane growing in Proserpine on the farm which Mrs. J. H. Hinschen now resides on. Mrs. M. McDonald lived at Glen Isla for many years.
