Joyce Gowan Abele died on March 10, 2007 in Boonville, Mo. Memorial services will be held at the First Christian Church in Boonville at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 25, 2007. The family will welcome visitors at the church prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

She was born on August 27, 1926 in Mokane, Mo., the youngest child of Robert and Dovie (Hudson) Gowan. She married Dr. William A. Abele on June 26, 1945 in Boonville. After living in St. Louis, New Haven, Ct. and Leominster, Ma. The Abeles returned to Boonville, where they have made their home for 53 years. Joyce spent many years as a full time homemaker, a role she treasured and executed masterfully. However, when her husband opened a new medical practice in 1976 and needed an office manager, Joyce returned to work outside the home.

Throughout the years, Joyce repeatedly gave of herself in service to her community. Among many endeavors, she was a member of the committee to establish Boonville's Council/Manager form of government, and the committee to develop the Cooper County Memorial Hospital. She was a charter member of the Boonville Industrial Development Authority. She was involved for many years with the Missouri Festival of the Arts and served as co-chair in 1979. She has served as chairman of the board of the First Christian Church in Boonville, and as president of the Boonville Women's Club and the GO Chapter of PEO. Above all, Joyce cherished her family who, while saddened by her passing, are grateful for the extraordinary gift of her life.

She leaves her husband of more than 61 years; her children Douglas (Mary Pat) of Boonville, Bruce (Marta) of Dubaque, Ia., Christopher of Kansas City, Mo. and Andrew (Patty) of Ballwin, Mo.; and her grandchildren Ashley (Luke) Rhode of Boonville, Adam of Chicago, Il., Elizabeth of Dallas, Tx. and Alexandra of Ballwin, Mo. Her brother Clarence (Eula) Gowan of Boonville also survives. Her brothers Milton, Garrett and James Gowan, and her sisters Mary Downs and Martha Neale, preceded her in death. Contributions in Joyce's memory may be made to Missouri River Hospice, 1410 Heriford Road, Columbia, Mo. 65202; Boonslick Heartland YMCA, 757 Third Street, Boonville, Mo.; or to the First Christian Church, 301 Fourth Street, Boonville, Mo.
