From San Jose Mercury News on 21 Jul 1907:
"A Los Angeles Woman Lawyer
"Mrs Frank W. Allender, wife of Attorney Allender, scored a triumph this week in Los Angeles before the District Court of Appeals, when she appeared as a member of the class of thirty-two applicants for admission to the bar.
"Mrs Allender, tall and stately, was the only woman in the class and passed with the highest honors the long and tedious examination in subjects and law.
"She was admitted to practice before all the courts of the state of California and will hereafter be known as the second member of the firm of Allender & Allender, attorneys at law.
"Mrs Allender, an accomplished musician and former music teacher on her marriage to Mr Allender about four years ago, entered his law office to take up the reading of law, since which time she has pursued it in a leisurely fashion. She is very much delighted with the law work.
"Mrs Allender expects to enter into active practice and within the next few days will present her first case.
"Out of the class of thirty-two applicants ten failed.
"Mrs Allender naively remarked after the close of the examination that she ‘had to keep fanning to keep from going through the floor.'
"After the first few questions which she answered promptly Mrs Allender grew confident. After that all was plain sailing.
"There are only two or three women attorneys in Los Angeles and Mrs Allender is the only one to enter the practice of law in partnership with her husband."
