Albert Grass, the grandson of Chief John Grass. He and Joseph Jordan were the first from Standing Rock to enlist, volunteering with an infantry company in the North Dakota National Guard - and Grass would be the first son of Standing Rock to sacrifice his life for the war.
His body would not come home until several years later, in May 1921, when thousands gathered for his funeral. The American Legion post at Fort Yates was named in his honor.
