Elizabeth Barr was born July 15, 1841 in Hamilton Co, Ohio to John Barr and Sarah Rachel Vaughan. She had six siblings: Thomas, Ellen, Daniel John, James, Mary and Sarah. She moved with her family to Iowa when she was 7 years old. Her mother was from Ohio and her father was from Ireland.

She married Harman Grass October 23, 1857 in Benton Co. Iowa and they were the parents of three children; Sarah Ellen, Daniel Frederick and Thomas Bird.

She served three years as a nurse in the Civil War-General Hospital Benton Barracks, Ward E-St Louis, Missouri and also served at Joe Holt Hospital in Jeffersonville, Indiana. She was discharged at Jeffersonville Indiana May 1, 1865. She was a charter member of Fargo Women's Relief Corps.

She died May 4, 1920 in the Soldiers Home in Lisbon, North Dakota .
