Second son of Noel Green and Mary F Francis. He and his older brother William served the Union from his home state: 8th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry, Co. H,K. In 1866 he married Martha Stroud. His second wife was Indeona Adeline Clementine Caldwell who he married in 1869. His third wife was Frances Rosella Daniels who he married in 1894.

James lived most of his life around the Benton, Christian County in Missouri. He was a farmer. In the 1920 Census he is found in Crawford County, Kansas. He lived in that area until his death in 1933. He was brought back to Missouri to be buried in Union Chapel Cemetery where much of his family were also laid to rest.
