She was born on November 17, 1916 in Menan, Idaho to Alvin Shippen and Elizabeth Ellen Hart Green. She grew up and attended school in Rigby. She married Merlon Cook Stephens on October 26, 1935 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.

Marian and Merly lived all their married life on a farm south of Rexburg, Idaho, where they raised their children. They grew potatoes, grain, hay, and raised foxes and mink. She helped with the farm chores, cooked for threshers, drove tractor, picked potatoes, worked on the combine, plus canning various meats, vegetables and fruits from their garden each year.

She worked in a local dress shop after her children were raised. She also worked in the Ricks College admissions office and later was a secretary in several departments at the college for 17½ years. College students were often dinner guests at their home. After Merly's death January 24, 1981, she worked as a secretary for the founder of Diet Center. She was a member of the Rexburg Book Lore Club.

She married Alva John Clarke on May 8, 1987 in Rexburg, Idaho. They divided their time between Mesa, Arizona and Provo, Utah. After John's death on December 30, 1995 she stayed in Orem, Utah for six years, and then moved to Pocatello, Idaho, to live close to her daughter.

For the last seven years, she resided at Sterling Court Adult Community in St. George, Utah.

She was renowned for writing missionaries and thank you notes. She gave away many cans of her famous homemade fudge to neighbors and friends.

She was active in the LDS Church serving in many leadership capacities as well as a Primary teacher. Her favorite church calling was Relief Society President at Ricks College Third Ward. She served a 2½ year service mission as a facilitator for the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah.
