John W. Gunn
John W. Gunn, 78, died in his sleep at his Caldwell home on Tuesday, June 16, 1998.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 22, at St. David's Episcopal Church, conducted by Father Michael Spillane.
John was born June 4, 1920, at Butte, Mont. He spent his early years in California, later moving to Boise where he graduated from Boise High School.
John practiced law in Caldwell for over 25 years. During this time he was counsel for the Industrial Special Indemnity Fund, helped shape the workers compensation law of Idaho, practiced in partnership with Renee Hoff, and received the "Boss of the Year" award from the Canyon County Legal Secretaries Association. He also served Canyon County as a justice of the peace. Before coming to Caldwell John was in private practice in Weiser, and worked for the Idaho attorney general as counsel for the Employment Security Commission. He was a member of BPOE, Elks.
John met Jean Gray while studying law at the University of Idaho. They married in 1943. Raising a family and law school were interrupted by World War II. John served in the Army and saw combat duty in the Pacific. He was among the first to enter Japan after the treaty. He served several years after the war in the Army Reserve.
John liked to travel and was always planning the next trip. He often enjoyed the company of friends and grandchildren in his travels. He and Jean spent many weekends relaxing in the mountain air and playing golf at Terrace Lakes. Jean died in 1991. Later John was treated for throat cancer. Treatments allowed him to enjoy four more years of friends, family and travel before the cancer returned this spring.
He is survived by his children, John Jr. of Garden Valley, Laurie of Portland, Ore., George of Boise; and six grandchildren; along with many friends, associates and various "old farts" whose lives were influenced, entertained and enhanced by John's generous nature and presence among us.
