Jane Hagel
(July 7, 1946 - March 25, 2008)

Jane Hagel, 61, died Tuesday at the Dells Area Health Center, after a short battle with cancer. Jane Emily (Nielsen) Hagel was born on July 7, 1946, to Harold and Ruby (Anderson) Nielsen, in Hurley, SD. She was the fourth and youngest child. Her family moved to Egan, SD, in 1953, and she attended Egan schools until she graduated in 1964. Jane married Hugh Hagel of Flandreau on July 8, 1966 in Flandreau. Together they raised livestock and farmed northwest of Flandreau. They had four children: Rochelle, Richard, Paula, and Daniel; with whom Jane was able to stay home until 1994, when she took a job with Flandreau Public Schools as an instructional aide. She continued in that position until February of 2008. Jane's greatest joys were her grandchildren and watching the monarchs tide over in the pine trees of her farm every fall. She enjoyed traveling and nature.

She will be deeply missed by her husband Hugh, Flandreau, SD; her children Rochelle (Ralph Knickrehm) Hagel, Rapid City, SD; Richard (Stefanie) Hagel, Hartford, SD; Paula (Steve) Hawks, Baltic, SD; and Danny Hagel, Flandreau; her sister Charlotte (Marvin) Welbig, Brookings and her brothers Conrad (Chris) Nielsen, Hood River, OR and Ralph (Deb) Nielsen, Richland, WA; her grandchildren Cassie and Hugh Knickrehm, Ruby and Tristan Hawks, and Emma Hagel; her extended family; her coworkers, colleagues, and students at Flandreau Schools; and many family friends. Jane was preceded in death by her parents Harold D. and Ruby E. Nielsen, and her grandparents Chris and Emelia Nielsen and Chris and Marie Anderson.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:00 am at our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Flandreau, with burial at Hillside Cemetery in Egan. Visitation will begin at 2pm Friday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, with the family present from 5-7 pm. www.skrochfc.com.
