Lucille Hagel, 88 of Presho, SD, and formerly of Sturgis, SD, passed away October 21, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Lucille A. Schummer was born April 4, 1923, in Sturgis, SD, the daughter of Domnick and Suzie Schummer. She grew up with three brothers on their farm 18 miles east of Sturgis. She was united in marriage to Buck Johnson; they had on son, Clifford Johnson. They separated in 1946.
Lucille worked in Sturgis at the Fruth Hotel for Jack Sherman until Clifford graduated from high school in 1957. Lucille married Carl Hagel in 1957. They worked for Rounds Construction Company for several years in Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Carl and Lucille moved to the Presho, SD, area in the 1960's, hauling gravel to several ranchers, farmers, and county roads. Carl had a stroke and Lucille took care of him at home. She figured as long as she was at home she would care for elderly people in her home. It was not long before she had a waiting list.
Survivors include her son, Clifford (Juanita) Johnson; two grandchildren, Donene (Stan) Taylor and Justin Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Roper Taylor; her brother, Robert Schummer and his family members; family members of her deceased brothers, Fred and Vic Schummer; and her stepchildren, Carla (Little Man) Carlson, Lee (Dick) Fritz, Bob (Audrey) Hagel, and Jim (Jo) Hagel; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren of her deceased husband, Carl.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Fred Schummer and his wife, Mary Ann; brother, Vic Schummer; husband, Carl Hagel; and stepdaughters, Helen Vanderbeek and Janice Kramer.
Lucille was a good-hearted person willing to help everyone. Mom loved her dogs and always had a dachshund. Her yard was full of beautiful trees and flowers. She was an excellent shot with her 22 rifle and loved to hunt and fish. Her home was always open to everyone. Mom looked forward to hunting season when her yearly hunters would come to stay. They also looked forward to Mom's hospitality. Mom was a great mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family and all those that knew and loved her.
Visitation will be held at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel, 1235 Junction Ave., Sturgis, SD, from noon to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 27, 2011.
Funeral services will be held at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 28, 2011, with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Aloysius Cemetery in Sturgis.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a memorial to Stanley Jones Memorial Clinic, 116 N. Main Ave., Presho, SD 57568.
