Agnes and her husband immigrated to the United States in 1904 while she was pregnant with their first child. First arriving in Halifax, Canada on the Sicilian on April sixth, they then crossed into Vermont on their way to Stanley, Wisconsin. They planned to spend time with sister in law Elina Borkhus. (It is unknown if Elina was a sister to Agnes.)
The couple had five children, Leif (born 1904 in Wisconsin), Bernhard Egil (in 1907 in Norway), Ruth (born in Norway about 1909), Alf Reidar (born February 12, 1911 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) and Rolf (born May 17, 1914 in Contra Costa County, California).
Elias supported the family by working as a photographer and painter.
