Obituary of Joan D Gilbert
Joan D Gilbert
27 December 1933 to 15 June 2016

Our beloved mom suddenly collapsed early morning on Sunday 12 June 2016 and died on 15 June 2016 after being removed from artificial life support.

She resided in Randolph since moving there from Livingston, with her husband and young family (two daughters and a son) in August 1960. Another daughter arrived within their first year in Randolph. Her home, her immediate and extended family and pets were where she sought to complete her life, find contentment and happiness.

Joan grew up in Boonton with her two sisters and graduated from Boonton High, daughter of Florence Kloo and Oscar Henry Hahn. Shortly thereafter she had her very own car and started her career as a draftsman at Picatinny Arsenal.

It was there she met her husband John (Jack) Gilbert; they had their first date on 17 September 1955 at the New Jersey shore and were married by 3 December 1955. It seems, the marriage "took"! She loved the beach, to travel when they could and to visit family in Florida, New Orleans, California, Virginia, Georgia, Rhode Island or Pennsylvania; or travel to Hawaii and Paris to celebrate their anniversary.

Joan loved anything her husband was interested in (Gettysburg, WWII, Civil War, the jitterbug, Patsy Cline, Big Band sounds, dancing – a must) and shared his quest to read the newspaper daily, master the crossword puzzles each morning, and follow politics and world events closely. This was fun to watch as we did not ever know what she would say – this type of passion must have come from her mom. She wanted to be involved in any and all discussion and intrigue involving what was happening in her children's, grandchildren's and pets' lives – this is what mattered and was shared via MNN (Mom News Network). Any and all other news of import would wait until she had and could telegraph the latest update within the family. She was better than Walter Cronkite and CNN combined.

Joan loved to garden and enjoyed numerous cups of coffee or tea looking out on her garden with the arbor our dad designed especially for her. She loved to escape in her car to visit various parts of New Jersey on a whim, and wore the most wicked sunglasses known to man which were frequently and often sat on and then replaced. Our mom loved to sew, and made numerous matching dresses when we were small, and then draperies for each and every room (later). She passed the love of sewing to each of her daughters.

We will wait for our turn to see our beloved mother again, as she holds hands with our dad (who knew people could really love each other for more than 55 years? – unheard of) and walks through the crashing ocean waves and laughs along the New Jersey shoreline at the silliness of things which would transpire.

Waiting are: Sally, Sharon, John and Jennifer; her grandchildren: Megan, Kelsey, John Ryan and Maggie; Michael and Kelly; her son-in-law Philip, and a potpourri of pets: Summer, Spencer, Sophie, Sloane, Oreo, Abbey, Zoe, Caleb, and Jake. Her sisters Lucille and Kathleen will also be waiting.

Mom - you are adored, loved, and dearly missed. Summer days will never be the same without you—going to the DQ at night, drinking your famous iced tea, having cocktails on the front porch (always complete with "nice" hors d'oeuvres), and our treks to the "family store" to check out the latest bargains.

Love you hon doll; we miss the latest MNN updates . . . till then…

The family invite all to share our wonderful memories of Mom on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 11:00am, Hackettstown Union Cemetery (access off of East Ave to graveside).
