Mrs. Jean Huntington Bailey Hairston, at the age of 99, was called home to be with our Lord on February 12, 2017.

Jean was born on January 19, 1918, in Jackson, Alabama to Ainsworth Lattimer Bailey and Eugenia Cannady Bailey.

To all who knew her, she was a beautiful, kind-spirited, loving lady who actively lived for the Lord.

In 1935, she graduated from State Secondary Agricultural School (now Jackson High School) as valedictorian and cheerleader.

After graduating, she was voted "Miss Jackson" and began working as a bookkeeper and clerk at a clothing store. The clothing store moved to Auburn, Alabama, where she continued her duties as bookkeeper and clerk.

While at Auburn, Jean studied business administration and was voted "Miss A-Day." As she was attending college, she met William George Hairston, Jr., whom she married on December 3, 1938.

They were blessed with four children and Jean dedicated her life to raising them in a loving, Christian home.

After their children were grown, she began working at Montclair Baptist Hospital as an executive assistant, while her husband worked as the Superintendent of Pipe Foundry at American Cast Iron Pipe Company (ACIPCO).

Following their retirement, she and George traveled to every state within the continental United States, except for two.

Jean was a member of First Baptist Church of Birmingham since 1938, where she taught a Junior High Sunday School class for twenty years. Jean was also a Life-Time Member of the Samford Auxiliary.

Jean loved to sing and was an active ballroom dancer until the age of 92. She was known as the "song bird" of Somerby Senior Living in Birmingham, Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter, Joan Brown. She is survived by her children, Kay Harless (Jim), George Hairston (Paula), Anne Sparks; Don Brown (son-in-law); twelve grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.

Jean embodied the fruit of the spirit as described in Galatians 5:22-23: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." Her beautiful life will forever be cherished.
