Charles W Hale Heald was born in Keene, NY in 1831, the son of Noah Farrar Heald 1803-1830 and his wife Betsey Jones Hale. There seems to be some question regarding his name on the Norton Cemetery Record as Heald/Hale. One family tree shows similar characteristics on the children of John Heald 1781-1845 and his wife Esther Smith b.1781, both of Vermont. By all records found, he used the surname “Hale”, even though this was his middle-name, and "Heald" his correct surname. In 1855 the census in Keene, NY Charles W Hale and his wife Betsey had a son born named Nelson. William followed in 1856 and Erwin in 1859. On 24 August 1864 at Plattsburg Charles enlisted as a Private in Company ”F” of the 14th NY Artillary. He stood 6 ft tall, had blue eyes and dark hair according to enlistment records, but later claimed to have enlisted in 1862 in company F of the 16th NY Infantry. He was discharged 3 June 1865 at Tennallytown, MD. He was widowed by 1880 and lived with his nephew's family in Keene, Erastus F Hale 1846-1882 and his wife Kate b.1849. Erastus Franklin "Hale Heald"'s father is Asa "Hale Heald" b.1823 and his wife Betsey Trumbull b.1822. Asa b.1823 is Charles W Hale's older brother. Asa had sons Erastus Hale b.1846; Anson T Hale 1847-1923; John Hale b.1852; and Roselie Hale b.1855. Asa, a farmer, is a son of Asa Heald("Heald" in all records)1794-1885, who had a farm in Jay by 1840, and was himself the son of an Asa Heald ca 1750, the Revolutionary War Soldier from Townsend, Massachusetts.

Note: this is not Charles W Hale b. 20 Sep 1830 in Gennesee Co, NY, the son of Peleg J Hale 1794-1877 and his mother Anna P Tracy 1796-1871.
